Background
When life insurance became known in Thailand in the reign of King Rama V, introduced by a foreign company which came to establish a representative office selling ordinary life insurance, with Somdej Chao Phraya Baramahasrisuriyawongsa, the top-rank minister at that time, being the first policyholder, life insurance was not yet popular. However, after the Insurance Division was established in 1929, under the Ministry of Commerce and Communications, the business began to gain increased popularity, with a large number of foreign life insurance companies opening their business in Thailand. It was not until 1942, during World War II, that a group of Thai nationals set up the first Thai-owned life insurance company. |
History of Thai Life Insurance Co., Ltd.
The life insurance business came to a halt when World War II broke out. Foreign life insurance companies closed up and returned to their home countries, causing great hardship to Thai policyholders.
 Under this circumstance, a group of Thai people, some of whom were high-ranking officials, joined forces, and, on January 22, 1942, founded Thai Life Insurance Company Limited, the first Thai owned life insurance company, aiming at providing security and protection for Thai families. The license to engage in the insurance business was granted by the Ministry of Finance on 23 March 1942.
A Major change took place in 1970, when the new Board of Executive Directors led by Mr. Vanich Chaiyawan took over the management. The company underwent a major change in the organizational structure and management system. Mr. Aniwat Krityakirana was the key man in laying the foundation for as well as setting up development plans for modern and efficient operation of Thai Life Insurance in every respect. He resigned due to health reasons in 1983 and was replaced by Professor Prayoon Chindasilp. In 1986, Mr. Apirak Thaipattanagul replaced Dr. Kopr Krityakirana as the President and Chief Operating Officer and has since remained in this position.
Beginning with a registered capital of 1,000,000 Baht, Thai Life Insurance has accumulated a wealth of experience and expertise. The company has steadily gained public confidence and at present enjoying the prestige of being a leading Thai insurance company. |
